SENOVA OFFSPACE EXTERIOR (2016)
Defining the next generation SUV
The Senova OffSpace is a concept study for a new premium type of crossover that combines the toughness and versatility of an off road car with the inside space of an MPV. It was presented at the Beijing Motorshow 2016 and awarded as best Chinese concept of that same year.
The OffSpace concept was a declaration of intend for the Senova Brand.
When we started collaborating with BAIC Motors, their Senova Brand struggled with finding a clear identity after isolated collaborations with diverse suppliers. We took on the task to create an identity and coherence for the brand. The OffSpace concept served as ‘halo car’ for the brand, making a statement both in terms of content (innovative typologies, focus on UX/UI) and styling (advanced and trendsetting).
WHAT WE DID
We were involved in the early stages of concept definition and responsible for the complete exterior and interior design, including the construction of the prototype.
DEFINE : We did a thorough research on the needs and expectations of the Chinese market. Based on the study we defined the typology of the car, the technical concept and the innovative contents for both exterior and interior, including HMI.
DESIGN: We developed the exterior and interior design. The long wheelbase and forward position of the windshield give the car a spacious cabin, while the big ground clearance and raised belt line offer great off road capabilities and a solid sense of protection.
This duality is expressed in the styling of the car: The OffSpace is imposing and tough on the outside, adapted to both the dense traffic and demanding off roads, but human on the inside, where we discover a harmonious space, dominated by spacious lines and generous volumes that give a sense of tranquility.
On the exterior the bold and off road like shapes of the lower area of the car are combined with the elegant and transparent design of the upper part. The surfaces of the OffSpace are full and powerful and are combined with ‘diamond cut’ graphics. Together they create a intensely modern car that is solid and dynamic at the same time.
DEVELOP: We developed the final surface data for the exterior and interior, integrating all the technical and legal requirements and constructed the prototype in collaboration with our trusted local construction partners. Thanks to the efficiency and expertise of Granstudio, the whole project was delivered from start to finish in less than 5 months, just in time for the presentation at the Motorshow.
This is a project that reflects our vision that context is crucial. The Chinese context is very different from the European one, and this needs to be translated into both the definition of content and the design of a project if we want it to be succesful.
